Bolting failures in Vestas spotlight
Vestas investigations into last month's failure of a V112 wind turbine in Sweden are focused on the join between the first and second tower sections.
The Danish manufacturer said the collapse just before Christmas "was caused by a failure in the bolted flange between tower sections one and two:".
It added: "Preliminary test results indicate that there is not a bolt quality issue. The ongoing investigation is focused on the bolt pre-tensioning procedure.?"
The 3MW machine failed on 24 December at Stena Renewable's 96MW Lemnhult wind farm. No injuries or other damage occurred as a result.
Vestas is currently “executing a plan to inspect the tower connections at other turbines at the Lemnhult site prior to returning the wind farm to full operation”.
The wind farm was built staring in 2012 with full operations kicking off in 2013.
